2008 – a year in numbers

December 31, 2008

Happy New Year! I didn’t get around to my weekly weigh-in yesterday, due to a hellacious day, so it will have to wait ill next Tues. All the better, it gives me some time to really get my work-out on! Which brings us to the new year. With 2009, the impending year of possibilities and new decisions, right at our doorstep, I’d like to reflect. On my old, anonymous, defunct (ish) blog, I would do a yearly wrap up in numbers. A holiday for the rest of us?

December 25, 2008

I’ve never been a big holiday season person.  As a jew, Chanukah obviously does not live up to the Christmas appeal.  I’m not going to lie and say I don’t enjoy the holidays.  Every year, my best friend and I would go to the Rockefeller Center tree, and do Chinese and a movie.  However, I’m across the country, and my people are few and far between.  It’s been hard to be here without jews for Christmas.  But it’s even harder to be single as now it seems like the holidays are for people in relationships.  I know three people who got engaged in the past week.  Not random people, 2 good friends and a family member.  Add that to at least 3 weddings I have to go to next year and the fact that this is the first year in 2 years that I’ve been alone for the holidays, and yeah…it hasn’t been an easy one.  So where’s the holiday for the rest of us single folks?

Weekly weigh-in

December 23, 2008

Current weight: 141.5
Loss: + 2 lbs! :(

Ugh. Not happy that I gained this week. However, given the recent circumstances, I’m not surprised. The past week has involved: staff appreciation dinner and drinks at Foreign Cinema, 2 holiday parties, and a cookie exchange. Definitely no shocker there. But on the plus side, I’ve been doing the 30 day shred workout, so some of the gain must be muscle, right? (at least I think it must be, since I’m so sore!) I think I can, I think I can…

On weight

December 17, 2008

So, I’ve gained weight.  In fact, I had gained weight prior to the marathon!  But I think it’s worse.  On top of that, my face has been breaking out, and it’s put me in a bit of a funk. I don’t like feeling gross and unattractive, and the weight isn’t going to magically disappear.  I’m going to do something about it.

I decided today that I’m going to post my weight loss goal on my blog, a la
Jen. It will help me be accountable, and it worked for her!  I will weigh in at my gym every Tuesday (that will also force me to go to the gym).  They don’t have a digital scale, but I’ll use the same one.  Today it was between 140 and 139, so I’ll say 139.5.  My goal is 125.  That’s 14.5 lbs.  And it’s the holidays.  Yikes!  But I’m feeling ambitious.  I ordered this the other day.  And the corresponding book.  Yep.  I also bought small weights to have at home.  I have a feeling part of my problem is lack of strength training.  Additionally, it wouldn’t hurt me to diet.  No doubt booze consumption doesn’t help anything….Anyway, I’m not going crazy on it, but I am going to be more mindful and goal-oriented.  I figure, if I make this a priority (esp since I’m going public with it), I will get results.  So here we go!

Sometimes it’s okay to be a waste of space…

December 14, 2008

…right? Last night I drank too much. Oops! It happens sometimes in awkward social situations. Not that the people I was with weren’t lovely, they were fabulous. But I was awkward – the only one not in a relationship! San Francisco is comprised of gay men and couples. I’m not a bitter single lady (yet), but it would be nice to meet more single mens in this fair city! I digress. So I woke up and was not feeling my greatest, and I called in sick to work. I spent (almost) the entire day in bed. I can’t remember the last time I did that! But it was kinda great. Sent out another grad school application. Nixed two. Caught up on Grey’s Anatomy (why is there a ghost on the show? can someone explain this to me?). Gmail chatted. I think I needed a day in bed. It was also a cold and rainy day. Things felt better from my bed. But I think I’m still drunk!

Oh, Friday night services! LBN blogged about it.  I love the cantor, she has an incredible voice.  And I will go back.  Gotta get my Jew on out here, there are so few of us!  I think every young Jew in the bay area was in that room.  Crazy

I’ve started thinking about New Year’s resolutions.  1) run another marathon (come on people, you know how I roll), 2) join a social networking group, like a young professionals or sports team.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Is it March yet?

December 12, 2008

Big trades in Mets news. Heilman be gone, bring on Putz! I can’t wait for spring training…

I’m drinking Delirium Noel tonight. The last time I drank this was with my putz of an ex. I’m glad it’s the good beer and not him that’s still around :)

I have tomorrow off. I had today off as well. It’s almost like having a real weekend. Huzzah!

Went to Barney’s with my friend Melissa after my meeting today.  I spent more $ than I thought I’d ever spend in one go, but it was on sale!  I bought : 2 pairs of heels (Miu Miu and Prada), 1 black pencil skirt (theory), 1 white button-down (DVF), 1 wrap top (DVF), and 1 black dress (Rag & Bone).  All very classic pieces that I will have forever.  And I opened a Barney’s credit card!  Seriously, who do I think I am?

Weekend Recap

December 8, 2008

I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m kind of excited about life right now!  My friend, LBN, who I know from waaaaay back in the day and reconnected with out here started a book club.  We met on Thursday night, after reading The Book Thief (an excellent book and highly recommended).  LBN hosted at her apt in Noe Valley (which is the cutest place ever).  Wine, tasty bites, and good conversation were shared by all.  Additionally, the girls were really cool.  Most of us are new to the city, and I think it’s going to be a great way to build friendships!  Friday, I quit my job at Boulette’s Larder.  I was only working there 2 days a week (one of which was a double shift with the cheese store) and it was getting to be to much.  Additionally, I didn’t feel well-treated by the staff.  They told me to come back for a last day of work on Sat.  It was such a sigh of relief to be done with them though!  Friday night I met up with a girl I met on a Nike training run (we can call her Nike).   Yes, in building new friendships, I go on girl dates!  We went to a wine tasting (wines from the Canary Islands, who knew?!) and had a great time.  Later that night, I met up with LBN, her husband, and some of their friends for dinner and more wine.  Delicioso and fun!  But I’ll tell you what was not fun.  Waking up at 5:30am the next day to make it to the Ferry Building at 7!  I worked on Saturday from 7am till 6:45 at my 2 jobs (well, it was my last day at Boulette’s, but still).  The best part of my day was visits from friends.  Everyone shows up at the Ferry Building on Saturdays for the Farmer’s Market and it is quite a scene.  Perhaps one of my favorite scenes in San Francisco.  But my day didn’t end there.  On Saturday night, I had yet another girl date!  My friend Cat, who I met through a friend in NY, went to an Elf party with me.  Costumes were highly recommended so I wore a red dress with black boots and a Santa Hat (Mrs. Claus) and she dressed as an elf, complete with awesome green tights.  The party bordered on fratty (who am I kidding, it was totally fratty), but it was a lot of fun.  We danced the whole night and even made it to a hasher afterparty.  Good times, late nights,  and new friends all around!

Things I’m looking forward to: running with the hashers twice a week (if possible), chocolate and cachaca on Tuesday, finishing grad school apps (more that I’m looking forward to the being done part…), 3 upcoming holiday parties, Friday night shabbat (I know, right?  more on that after it happens…), the next book club meeting (on inauguration night – we’re reading either of Barack’s books – kind of like a choose your own adventure!), potential trips to wine country, and of course, more girl dates with my new friends!

It’s like college, only gayer!

December 4, 2008

The other day I was walking in my neighborhood when some guy started talking to me. Rather, he yelled at me. I had stepped out into the street before the light turned green. I swear, 3 people yelled “get back!” as a car came past. Okay people, I’m a jaywalker but NOT an idiot. So, after the light turns, one of the guys approached me and said “we thought you were going to get hit back there!” We chatted for about three minutes, while walking, when he stopped and said “this is my apartment, want to come up and get high?” Seriously? I’ve known you for all of several minutes now, you want to invite me, the stranger from the street, up to your pad? I mentioned this to my friend who’s been living here for a few years now and she was like “oh yeah, that happens. Just the other day, some guy on the bus was trying to get me to come smoke with him.” For realz?! So we have a new tagline for the city – San Francisco: it’s like college, only gayer!

My old blog made me nostalgic.  Both in a good and bad way.  One thing I know, writing was definitely helpful and therapeutic for me.  Especially when I wrote with brutal frankness and TMI.  Bex is back, bitches, gearing up for 2009 and new adventures.  I’m going try to post more regularly, so tune in and enjoy the ride :)
