What makes a good picture?

I just started a photography class last night.  I’m really excited because it seems like a bit of a crash course in photography and I want to be able to take better pictures on my travels.  I feel like my travel pictures are always so boring and flat and it would be good to learn more about composition, lighting, and how to better use my camera.  It’s a small class, only 7 people showed up last night, and the guy teaching it is someone I met last summer.  His work can be found here.  He was generous enough to loan us some of his cameras for practice.  I know what by the end of it I will need to get an SLR (something I’ve been wanting for a looong time).  Right now I just have a Canon SD600 (Powershot).  It’s small and good, but not technical enough for what we’re doing in class.  This week our assignments are to take 3 pictures of our hands in different lighting and to pick a color, and take 36 pictures of things in that color.  We’ll only be showing 6.  I’m nervous.   I know that the point is to learn and practice, but I don’t know how to shoot a good picture!  It will be scary to have other people critiquing my work.  I just hope I’m not the worst!

I just found out that one of my best friends (who I have known since I was 5) will be in NYC for the last weekend in June. Seeing as how this coincides with the end of the school year, my completion of the Teaching Fellowship, the beginning of my European adventure and my birthday, I am planning a big Birthday/Going Away Party/End of the School Year Bash!!! Friday, June 29th - don’t make plans for Saturday morning.

Passed my CAP!

A little over a month ago I had to turn in this huge Cumulative Assessment Project bullshit for graduate school, and today, almost a week before graduation, I found out that I passed. Huzzah! Looks like I will be graduating after all

Un-Heroic

Was I the only one disappointed by tonight’s Heroes finale? I thought that it was overly cliched (all you need is love? the wizard of oz? home is where the heart is?), the fight between Sylar and Peter was totally anti-climactic, and wtf with Sylar getting stabbed, seeing all those people flash through his eyes, and then escaping into the sewer like Javert or TMNT? I totally called the whole shape-shifter/Nikki/Micah scenario. And don’t get me started on the whole avoiding the bomb situation. How are they going to explain the disappearance of congressman Petrelli to the public? Oh yeah, our newly appointed congressman? Well he exploded into the sky last night for the good of our nation. Why couldn’t Peter just do that gay*-ass flying maneuver on his own? I guess sometimes we just need to be held before we go out in flames.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the show and am pretty stoked for Volume 2 (Generations??? Booyah!). But I still thought the Transformers trailer was more exciting than tonight’s episode.

*Note: I’m pretty adamantly against the use of the word “gay” as an adjective to describe things that are lame or suck…however, you have to admit, Nathan’s mode of flying is pretty gay.
